Types of Instructional Design Models

Instructional design models are the frameworks used to create effective learning experiences. They provide a structure for organizing and presenting content in an engaging way that encourages learners to acquire new knowledge, skills, and attitudes.

There are several types of instructional design models including behaviorism, cognitivism, constructivism, blended learning, problem-based learning (PBL), game-based learning (GBL), inquiry-based learning (IBL), experiential learning (EL) and flipped classroom instruction.

  • Behaviorism focuses on observable behaviors which can be measured through testing or other assessments.
  • Cognitivism emphasizes the internal mental processes involved in understanding information and solving problems.
  • Constructivism is based on the idea that learners actively construct their own knowledge by making connections between prior experience and new information they encounter during instruction.
  • Blended Learning combines traditional face-to-face instruction with online activities such as webinars or virtual classrooms where students interact with each other remotely while working together on projects or assignments.
  • Problem Based Learning involves providing students with real world scenarios that require them to identify relevant issues and develop solutions using available resources within a given timeframe.
  • Game Based Learning uses interactive games to engage learners in meaningful tasks related to specific objectives.
  • Inquiry Based Learning promotes exploration of topics through questioning techniques designed to encourage deeper thinking about concepts being studied.
  • Experiential Learning allows participants to learn from direct experience rather than relying solely on lectures or textbooks.
  • Flipped Classroom Instruction requires students to view lecture material before class so they can use class time for active discussion and hands-on activities related to the topic at hand

Remember, there is no one size fit all solution, by understanding the various types of instructional models, you can choose the right combination of methods to optimize the learning experience.
