Understanding the Steps in Instructional Design

The instructional design process is a systematic approach to creating effective learning experiences. It involves analyzing the needs of learners, designing and developing appropriate instruction materials, implementing those materials in an educational setting, assessing learner outcomes, and evaluating the effectiveness of the overall program. The process begins with identifying what skills or knowledge need to be taught; this includes determining who will benefit from these lessons as well as understanding any constraints that may affect how they are delivered (e.g., time available). Once objectives have been established then it’s necessary to create content that meets them—this could include lectures/presentations for classroom-based training or interactive activities such as games for online courses.
